Halloween is once again almost upon us. Will you be making a last minute dash to the shops for sweets?
How about another, healthier option? This Halloween give someone a scary book. That is the message from author, Neil Gaiman, who has set up All Hallow's Read to entice adults and children to give each other books. It doesn't have to be a new book.
This is a tradition that can be traced back to this moment in time.
So, what kind of books should you give?
“An appropriate one. If you’re giving a kid a scary book, make it a kid-appropriate scary book. You wouldn’t give the same kind of scary book to one person than you would another, any more than one book is right for everyone. People like different things.”
For pre schoolers HarperCollins recommends Ten Little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino or The Dangerous Alphabet by Neil Gaiman. For younger readers Gaiman recommends Goosebumps by R.L. Stine or The Witches by Roald Dahl. For teens and adults Gaiman suggests The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Further recommendations are on the site.
Sound like a good idea? Better than sweets?
