Authors raise money for Syrian refugees

On September 4, 2015

Patrick Ness by Helen GilesPatrick Ness has spearheaded a campaign to raise funds for Syrian refugees. 24 hours after Ness announced the campaign, £227,000 ($496,000) has been raised.

Yesterday on Twitter Ness said he would match £10,000 given to Save the Children. The public became more aware of the crisis this week after the body of a young boy, Aylan Kurdi, who was fleeing Syria washed up on the coast of Turkey.

YA author John Green matched Ness’ bid followed by Jojo Moyes and Green’s brother, vlogger Hank Green. Derek Landy followed suit, with two anonymous donors contacting Ness to say they would each match £10,000.

YA authors including Rainbow Rowell, Gayle Foreman, Tahereh Mafi, Brendan Reichs, Ally Carter, Margaret Stohl, Jenny Han, Shannon Hale, Siobhan Vivian, Richelle Mead, Ransom Riggs all pledged funds.

A group of YA authors then said they would match another £10,000. Those authors are Stohl, Melissa de la Cruz, Sabaa Tahir, Leigh Bardugo, Lauren DeStefano, Pseudonymous Bosch, David Levithan, Libba Bray, Lauren Oliver, Jacqueline Woodson, Alexandra Bracken, IW Gregorio, Stacey Lee and Maureen Johnson, who also gave nicknames to everyone who donated on her timeline.

Ness put a message up on his page thanking all those who have supported the campaign:
This is all so amazing, I've basically spent 24 hours a bit weepy. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!! KEEP IT GOING!!!
