George R.R. Martin has responded to his dedicated fans impatiently waiting for the next book in the popular Song of Ice and Fire series by releasing an excerpt from his upcoming novel The Winds of Winter.

Martin's series has sold over 25 million copies. Its massive fan following is in part due to the successful HBO series Games of Thrones, based on the books.

The sixth book in the series at least seems to be imminent although a release date has not been set. The Winds of Winter follows on from Martin's 2011 A Dance with Dragons. Fans should be feeling a little more upbeat as Martin has also cancelled his upcoming engagements to concentrate on finishing The Winds of Winter.

In the meantime fans have Game of Thrones Season 5 to look forward to. Season 5 premieres at 11am on Monday, April 13 on Foxtel's Showcase Channel
