Sydney will be the third city to host a Premiere event after New York and the opening of the 66th Cannes Film Festival.

Filmmakers Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, together with cast-members Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Elizabeth Debicki, will attend the Australian Premiere at Hoyts, The Entertainment Quarter, on Wednesday 22nd May 2013.

Luhrmann’s screen adaptation is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, considered one of the greatest American novels. Told through the eyes of Jay Gatsby’s detached neighbour and friend, Nick Carraway, Fitzgerald’s powerful prose hints at an era of loosening morals and glittering jazz. His tragic social satire encapsulates the decadence of an era.

After the war, the mysterious Jay Gatsby, pursues wealth, riches and the lady he lost to another man. He buys a mansion across from her house and throws lavish parties to try and entice her. When Gatsby finally does reunite with Daisy Buchanan, Carraway’s cousin, tragic events are set in motion.

The Great Gatsby opens in Australia on May 30, 2013; the film will be in 3D and 2D.
