By Sophia Whitfield

Kate McQuaile continues the success record of graduates from the Faber novel-writing course. She works as a journalist and lives in London, although grew up in Ireland where the majority of her debut novel is set.

Her protagonist Louise Redmond left Ireland for London in her 20s to study music. Years later she is summoned back home to say farewell to her mother on her deathbed.

Marjorie is close to the end of her life and Louise is keen for closure. She is desperate for her mother to tell her the secret she has wanted to uncover all her life – the name of her father, but Marjorie dies without revealing her father’s identity.

Louise’s marriage to Sandy has broken down. At a time when her life is falling apart Louise is finally confronted with clues about her father that her mother has unwittingly left behind. As Louise rifles through her mother’s belongings she unearths more puzzling details of a fractured life leading her to finally embark on a search for her true identity.

The pieces of the puzzle slowly begin to come together as memories and letters from the past complete the picture.

A brilliantly plotted novel that will keep you guessing to the end. You can buy the book in Australia here and in the UK here.
